La ira y la crítica en la creatividad
En una columna reciente de su blog "The frontal cortex" el escritor Jonah Lehrer reflexiona sobre el supuesto valor que tiene la "ira" en nuestra creatividad, estimulando a la gente a pensar de manera diferente. Si bien para mí aquí se están mezclando erróneamente reacciones de enojo u ofuscación, con la posibilidad de hacer observaciones "brutalmente críticas" (que no necesariamente conllevan dosis de agresión), es interesante detenerse en lo que parece costar incorporar en esta cultura la crítica como un elemento positivo y enriquecedor a la hora de crear o mejorar algo:
"At first glance, this cultivation of anger and criticism seems like a terrible idea. We assume that group collaboration requires niceties and affirmation, that we should always accentuate the positive. Just look at brainstorming, perhaps the most widely implemented creativity technique in the world. In the late 1940s, Alex Osborn, a founding partner of the advertising firm BBDO, outlined the virtues of brainstorming in a series of best-selling books. The most important principle, he said, was the total absence of criticism. According to Osborn, if people were worried about negative feedback, if they were concerned that their new ideas might get ridiculed by the group or the boss, then the brainstorming process would fail."
Lehrer profundiza esta confusión entre enojo y acción crítica validando un estudio reciente publicado en The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology que avala el rol de la ira en los procesos creativos. Sin embargo, cuando tiene que explicar cuál podría ser el mecanismo en acción resume: "…when our mood is neutral or content, there is no incentive to embrace unfamiliar possibilities, to engage in mental risks or brash new concepts. (Why rock the boat?) The absence of criticism has kept us in the same place".
¿Acaso es necesario estar exaltados, enojados, incluso tristes, para poder movilizar recursos intelectuales, para estar inspirados y decidir hacer algo? ¿Y qué rol juega la crítica en todo esto?..
